Some of those towns in Canada are remote AF. It’s amazing that they are inhabited at all.

Tofino is the surf capital of Canada. Remote-yes, packed full of tourists- also yes.

I recommend staying at Ocean Village on Mackenzie beach;

...and then they opened a road to it! And then paved it! So I get to drive on it!

Case in point, I took this from Port Hardy :

Kinja'd!!!

THE CARROT CAMPAIGN

This carrot, marking the norther end of the Island Highway, is a symbol of government road building promises, dangled in front of North Island settlers since 1897. The successful late 1970's “Carrot Campaign” was aimed at making the government keep promises of a completed Island Highway.

What they are referring to is the North Island Highway, the stretch of BC-19 north of Campbell River . It is about 250km long, servicing 3 “Ports” at the end of it, combined population of about 7500.

I try to get out there at least once every couple of years, because it is magical... for that 2.5hrs driving time, once I have seen as few as 3 cars, all going the other way. I saw more black bears than people.

So, I doubt that it wa s worth the expenditure, but I am thankful at the same time. Thanks, Carrot!

Good on Canadian regulators. We wouldn’t want to have any unlicensed patios

I wouldn’t consider Tofino particularly remote. It’s only like five hours out of Vancouver , which is one of the biggest cities in the country, including the two-hour ferry crossing from Vancouver that dumps you in Nanaimo , a city of 100k. So you’re less than three hours from a large urban centre, with a couple cities of 25k between Nanaimo and Tofino. And the roads are paved the whole way. It’s not like Bella Coola, which is at the end of a 300-mile road, not all of it paved, with only a handful of communities along the route, none of which have a population greater than 500. Or Caniapiscau, Qc , which is 400 miles of road, 300 of gravel, from the next town. Or the cities up in the Te rritories that are 20+ hours of driving from a big city, or like any of the hundreds  of communities you can only drive to when the lakes and rivers freeze, or the thousands of communities up north that are fly-in only.

Tofino’s not that remote. I live in the next province over, and could be there by 10 tomorrow morning, having hopped in a car this evening without having bothered to plan anything, or worry about being able to stop for gas anywhere, even in the middle of the night . The biggest holdup would be that the first ferry across doesn’t leave until 5 am so if I left now I ’d end up sitting outside the terminal for a couple hours.

Paying for Ferry’s bugs me.. maybe it was growing up in the Kootenays but I much prefer circle routes and back roads to getting through the lower mainland then paying $200 to drive around the island with all they other lower mainlanders on vacation..

W e went to the Hornby farmers market last week and it was 90% ‘artists’ selling $500 ‘ pieces’ and $40 bottles of wine. L ast time I was there it was actually vegetables and a cinnibun if you were fancy.

I love driving on Vancouver Island, because of the fresher pavement (some roads were paved as recently as 1970s), mostly being former logging roads (banked corners! originally for drainage but also for fun!), and milder winters so less chance of frost heaves .

But yeah, being forced to take the ferries mean adding at least $160 to the trip budget, even for 1 guy and 1 car :-(

So, I tend to alternate going to Vancouver Island and Interior BC, year by year. This year, in addition to the regular BMW Club’s Duffey Lake -> Thompson Plateau trip, I planned out a route to go along the Crowsnest and then up the Okanagan, to overnight in Kelowna... and will hopefully get to do that soon.

Actually, I have a book! Destination Highways !

So the last time I did Okanagan was 2 years ago to the day, which you can see the album here: Google Photos Album

From those pics, you can see that I went from Hope -> Cascade Lookout, Manning PP -> Green Mountain Road -> OK Falls -> Oliver -> Anarchist Mountain Lookout -> Kettle Valley Railway -> Big White -> Fintry -> Coldwater Road.

This time, instead of going up Kettle Valley (BC-33 is a nice drive but very long without much worthy to stop for), I want to try to get a guided tour to the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory , which is now available on weekends.

Kinja'd!!!

Speaking of Kamloops, our BMW Club stops at the Best Western every year as part of our Duffey Lake trip. So once again look for a bunch of BMWs from the Lower Mainland and the Puget Sound Club in that area at the end of August!
